Remember the epic scene in Ghostbusters when the heroes 'crossed the streams'?
It resulted in the huge fireball of an explosion you see above.
There was no way Peter, Egan, Ray and Winston would've survived. But they did.
In fact, they even came back for the sequel, Ghostbusters II, right?
But what if the Ghostbusters really DID die in that blast but just didn't know it?
What if the Ghostbusters were now ghosts?
This is Ghostbusters III:
What if the Ghostbusters came back as ghosts?
This would make the events of Ghostbusters II an adventure hat took place in the nether world.
Ghostbusters III would follow Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston as they come to the realization that they were killed after they crossed the streams, destroyed the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and defeated Gozer.
The world they now lived in was an alternate nether world created for them by the vengeful Gozer. A world in which they would always defeat some supernatural bad guy, only to be eventually reviled and ridiculed by the same people they believed they've just saved.
At this revelation, Egon devises a plan for them to escape Gozer's alternate nether world by making contact with the living and instructing them to build an ecto-transporter device that would reconstitute their atomized bodies (which he learns are in a state of limbo) and transport them back to the real world. The plan only works however, while they are trapped in Gozer's nether world. If they are 'released' by Gozer to go completely to the other side, they would be lost forever.
The Ghostbusters attempt to contact the real world by 'haunting' their old offices, which to their surprise have become the headquarters for an international Ghostbusters franchise operation run by Dana Barrett.
As Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston feverishly try to make it back to the real world, Gozer unleashes a paranormal army of ectoplasmic soldiers upon the face of the earth, effectively overwhelming the resources of every Ghostbuster franchise operation in the world.
Paris, Russia, the Middle East, China, etc., are now a battleground between the living and the ectoplasmic forces of Gozer!
Before all hope is lost, the Ghostbusters bring every remaining Ghostbuster on earth into Gozer's nether world by reversing the polarity on their ecto-transporter device.
The battle is now on Gozer's turf! Our world is momentarily spared from the ensuing war.
But as the tide once again turns and Gozer's victory seems imminent, Egon realizes they can defeat Gozer by using their ecto-transporter device to send Gozer completely over to the other side.
Egon uses the device and transports all of the new Ghostbusters back to earth. Only he, Peter, Ray and Winston remain because their atomized bodies are in limbo.
He then grimly notifies the other Ghostbusters that if they were to use the device to transport Gozer to the other side, the energy required would also release from limbo their atomized bodies without reconstituting them, causing them to also be released to the other side forever.
The Ghostbusters take the risk and Gozer is banished forever. Their atomized bodies are released from limbo, and they find themselves....BACK IN OUR WORLD!
Instead of being sent to the other side with Gozer, they find themselves as ghosts in our world!
The Ghostbusters now help bust ghosts as ghosts themselves.
